Hip Hop Against Hunger Celebrates 10th Anniversary in Newark
Hip Hop Against Hunger is an annual benefit concert where emcees, DJs, graffiti artists, and breakdancers come together to raise money and collect food, clothing, and supplies for food-insecure communities.
Newark, NJ — Newark is set to host the 10th Annual Hip Hop Against Hunger Benefit Show on Saturday, October 26th, from 1 PM to 5 PM, at Express Newark (54 Halsey Street). This event will bring together music, art, and activism to combat hunger and homelessness in the community.
Founded by Elgin Cintron in 2010, Hip Hop Against Hunger has been on a mission to use the power of hip-hop culture to address food insecurity and homelessness. In a recent interview, Cintron shared how his upbringing and passion for music inspired the initiative.
"I started Hip Hop Against Hunger in Tampa, Florida, where there was a huge need due to the high concentration of homeless people. Music and hip-hop are my roots, and I saw them as tools for change. It's not just about performing; it’s about doing something for the people," Cintron explained.
Raised by a mother who instilled the value of giving back, Elgin combined his love for hip-hop with a commitment to community service. In its early years, Hip Hop Against Hunger hosted benefit shows featuring local MCs, DJs, breakdancers, and graffiti artists—the four elements of hip-hop. These shows collected canned goods, toiletries, and clothing to support local shelters and food banks. Over time, the movement grew to include fundraising efforts, with thousands of dollars and essential items donated to those in need.
When Cintron moved to New Jersey in 2017, it took time to establish Hip Hop Against Hunger in his new community. But now, the movement continues to thrive, particularly in Newark, where food insecurity remains a pressing issue.
Since its inception, Hip Hop Against Hunger has collected and distributed over $14,673 in funds, 5,000+ pounds of food, and 600+ boxes of clothing and toiletries to local food banks and shelters. This year’s goal is to raise $15,000 to support the community fridge initiative at La Casa De Don Pedro and other services that assist over 75,000 people annually across Newark and Essex County.
Event Highlights:
- Performances by: El Da Sensei (Artifacts), Silent Knight, Khalil Jibran & Mirza
- DJ Sets by: Mr. Len and DJ Toshi
- Graffiti Art by: GetLostALot
- Family-friendly activities, including breakdancers, vendors, a raffle, and guest speakers
With over 994,800 people struggling with food insecurity in New Jersey, the need for community support has never been greater. Hip Hop Against Hunger serves as a rallying call to action, using music to unite the community and uplift those who need it most.
"We're not just collecting food; we're giving people hope," Cintron explained. "The more we do, the more we inspire others to give back."

The event is free with a minimum donation of $10 to La Casa De Don Pedro. Donations of non-perishable food items are also welcomed. All proceeds will benefit local families and individuals facing hunger and financial crisis.
