Brick City Voices: Youth-Led Journey into Newark's Past

Over the past 6 weeks, the Brick City Voices Oral History Project has made remarkable strides, thanks to our partnership with the Community Media Center at Express Newark and 12 passionate young people from across Newark. These dedicated youth have been at the forefront of our mission to uncover and preserve the rich history of our city.

Our young storytellers have:

  • Conducted interviews with long-time Newark residents
  • Explored pre-interstate Newark through firsthand accounts and research
  • Dived into topics like urban renewal, white flight, community transformation, and local activism
  • Uncovered personal stories of resilience in the face of systemic challenges

Their fresh perspectives have brought new energy to our organization, bridging generational gaps and fostering a deeper understanding of Newark's complex past. As they've listened to and documented these powerful narratives, our youth partners have gained invaluable insights into their city's heritage and the forces that have shaped it.

This intergenerational collaboration has not only preserved crucial pieces of Newark's history but also empowered our youth to become active stewards of their community's legacy. Their enthusiasm and dedication remind us of the importance of passing down our stories to the next generation.

Stay tuned for upcoming events where these young storytellers will share their discoveries and reflections. Check out some of the interviews they've captured here.
