The Hood Report: October 001
On Tuesday, a major fire near the Newark-Irvington border left one person hospitalized and displaced over two dozen residents. Newark officials reported that the fire started in an abandoned home at 71 Montgomery Street in Irvington around 5 p.m. and quickly spread to four other occupied homes. One elderly man was injured and transported to University Hospital, but no other injuries were reported.
The blaze displaced 26 people from nine families, with the American Red Cross assisting. Fire crews faced challenges due to low water pressure, an ongoing issue highlighted by community advocate Donna Jackson, who noted previous incidents in the area with similar problems.
One of the impacted homes collapsed, and firefighters are continuing to monitor the scene for hotspots. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. (News 12 NJ)
The United Way of Greater Newark is one of many organizations supporting victims of this fire.
